TURKEY
Eastern Anatolia Highlights

Ararat -
A dormant volcano, it looms majestically over the far eastern tip of Turkey and most of the year is snow capped. The highest peak at 5,165 meters is higher than any of the European Alps.

Dawn at Ararat
Rising with an unobstructed view 4000 meters above the surrounding plain, it has acquired renown as the resting place of Noah’s Ark. Both Josephus and Marco Polo mention its existence on the mountain.

Tigris-Euphrates -
Two great biblical rivers associated with the Garden of Eden. The Tigris has a higher water of volume than the Euphrates and flows at a faster speed. The Euphrates is a ‘lazy river’ and in antiquity, wooden rafts carried their commerce down river from Diyarbakir to Baghdad.
Antioch -
The city nestles at the northern end of a gulf against the high Lycian Mountains. It its Golden Age it boasts street lighting equal to that of Ephesus and Rome. Early Believers were first called “Christians” in this city and a very influential church was established. From here, Paul and Barnabas were sent of their first Missionary journey. The mountain-top Castle overlooking the city is the remainder of Crusader times.
Haran -
Well located on the ‘Fertile Crescent’, this was once Abraham’s home and where his father died and was buried. In Haran lived Rebecca, and the moving biblical story of Rachel, Leah and Jacob took place. The Temple to the moon god Sin had a wooden roof made from the Cedars of Lebanon and was perhaps the greatest in Mesopotamia.

Trabzon -
Well positioned on the southern shores of the Black Sea, the city enjoys a warm, humid climate ideal for growing tea, hazelnuts and Avocados. Hadrian and Justinian supported it as one of the ports on the Silk Route and it was visited by Marco Polo on his travels. The Cathedral of St. Sophia overlooking the sea is perhaps the most famous site in the town.
Lake Van -
Turkey’s largest fresh water lake. The small but quaint Akdamar Island can be reached by a short local ferry sail. On the island there’s a 10th Century Armenian Cruciform Church with walls lavishly covered with reliefs illustrating Biblical scenes.
