Central
Anatolia Highlights |

|
|
Antioch
of Pisidia -
A city off the beaten track and not on a major
route but once with a wealthy Jewish Community during St.
Pauls visit. His first recorded sermon in Acts was to
this community, resulting in sever persecution, shaking the
'dust from their feet on their departure.
|
|
|
Iconium -
(Konya) Located on the western edge of a great plain, the
city endures dust clouds in the summer and snow blizzards
in the winter. It was a crossing point for many trade routes
and therefore the city enjoyed prominence in antiquity. Renowned
today as a religious centre of the Mevlana Dervishes (the
Whirling Dervishes). Paul and Barnabas visited on their first
Missionary journey, caused an uproar and had to flee.

Ankara
-
Once only a Turkish village of 20,000 people, is today Turkeys
capital with 5 million inhabitants. Being on one of the main
Hittite highways, its Citadel dominates the city and its
Byzantine Walls are still prominent. The spacious Museum of
Anatolian Civilisations is well worth the visit. St. Paul dedicated
an Epistle to the Churches of Galatia in this region.

|
Tarsus
-
Birthplace of Paul, born around A.D. 10 as a Jew of the Tribe
of Benjamin where his craft was Tentmaker. Paul himself described
Tarsus as a no mean city and later, Alexander
the Great drowned in the Cyndus River which runs through the
town.
