Beirut City

Beirut

Beirut, with its million-plus inhabitants settles on a great promontory jutting into the blue sea with dramatic mountains rising behind it. The city stands on the site of a very ancient settlement going back at least 5,000 years. Its name appeared in cuneiform inscription as early as the 14th century BC.
Byblos
Byblos, from where the name 'Bible' is derived, is one of the top contenders for the "oldest continuously inhabited city" award. Although its beginnings are lost in time, modern scholars say the site of Byblos goes back at least 7,000 years. Its well preserved Crusader Church and Castle reflect its importance in Crusader history.
The Cedars
Although somewhat reduced in numbers, these famous mountain biblical trees still impress. Such is the quality of the timber, that Solomon furnished the Temple in Jerusalem and the ancient Phoenician sailors trusted their ships to withstand the winter Mediterranean seas.
Tyre
Some archaeological evidence suggest that it goes back to the start of the 3rd millennium BC. From the golden days of Hiram King of Tyre, the siege of Nebuchadnezzar and Alexander, the grandeur of Roman presence, and the ministries of Jesus, this seaside town has a great and colourful history.
Sidon
Perhaps inhabited as long ago as 4000 BC, this ancient city was built on a promontory facing an island, which sheltered its fleet from storms and served as a refuge during military incursions from the interior. Visited by Jesus, St. Mark gives an account of the "Syrophenician Woman".The Crusader seas castle is a reminder of this being on the Jerusalem pilgrimage route.
Tripoli
The capital of the north, founded by the three cities of Sidon, Tyre and Arados island during the Persian era. The new town replaced the old near the hill of the Crusader Castle of Raymond de Saint-Gilles, founder of the County of Tripoli.
Baalbeck
Perhaps the Jewel in Lebanon's crown and can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world. Here the god Baal was worshipped and perhaps the largest, best preserved, Roman temples ever built can be seen.

Solomon
And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses, a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home...
(1st Kings 5: 14)

David
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Psalm 92:12

Hosea
His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.
(Hos 14:6)

Jesus
And from thence he arose and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon and entered into an house and would have no man know it, but he could not be hid.
(Mark 7: 24)

Paul
Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.
(Acts 21:3)
