In
solitary visits to the Holy places, one feels greater devotion
and abstraction from the world than when they go in general
procession. It is very pleasant to behold the earnest and
differing behaviour of the pilgrims at the holy places, which
places have a power of moving to tears men who, in any other
place, could not be moved by any speech, painting, threat,
or adversity.

When
we beheld with our eyes the long desired Holy City, we straightway
dismounted our asses and greeted it thus; Hail Jerusalem,
city of the Great King, glory and crown of the whole earth,
joy and delight of the believers soul. At the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre, we flung ourselves down in the courtyard
and prayed, and kissed the earth. Of surity it seemed to the
pilgrims that virtue breahted forth from the earth itself.
