Greece
GREECE CONSISTS OF A MOUNTAINOUS PENINSULA BOUNDED BY THE IONIAN, MEDITERRANEAN, AND AEGEAN SEAS, AND MANY OUTLYING ISLANDS, OF WHICH THE LARGEST ARE CRETE, EUBOEA, LESBOS, CHIOS, AND RHODES. 4th CENTURY BC GREECE WAS POISED AT ITS MOST TRIUMPHANT PERIOD: THE HELLENISTIC AGE. THIS EPOCH WAS THE "AGE OF THE GREEKS"; DURING THIS TIME, GREEK CULTURE AND POWER EXTENDED ITSELF ACROSS THE KNOWN WORLD. WHILE THE CLASSICAL AGE OF GREECE PRODUCED GREAT LITERATURE, POETRY, PHILOSOPHY, DRAMA, AND ART, THE HELLENISTIC AGE "HELLENIZED" THE WORLD. INTO THIS CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT PAUL THE APOSTLE PREACHED THE CHRISTIAN GOSPEL CULMINATING IN HIS GREAT DEFENCE ON MARS HILL, ATHENS.

Country Highlights

Thessalonika
The current capital of Macedonia and second largest city of Greece. It is here that St Paul first brought the message of Christianity (50 A.D.). Thessaloniki became the second most important city of the Byzantine Empire, next to Constantinople.

Neapolis- Philippi
Neapolis (Kavala) is the sea port to which Paul arrived after receiving the 'Macedonian call' and thus bringing the Gospel to Europe. Philippi, ancient capital of Macedonia, where Paul baptised by the river and later was jailed.

Kalambaka
An area of gigantic rocks etched by time into a variety of shapes; grey stalagmites rising towards the sky, they appear as nature's gift to the pious who, dnven by faith, have opted for solitude and a life of worship. The monasteries, with their wooden galleries and corniced rooftops, crown the summits of these formidable pinnacles precariously hanging over the sinister abysses.

Delphi

Location of the famous 'oracle', a stunning site halfway from the Gulf of Corinth to Central and Northern Greece central Greece. Well preserved remains in a mountainous setting.

The Collossus of Rhodes

Athens

The current capital Greece took its name from the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. This is where democracy was born. The marvel of architecture, the Parthenon, was built on one of Athens' two hills. It was on Mars Hill that St Paul addressed the Athenians and Greek philosophers.

Corinth
Ancient Corinth was called 'wealthy' because of its commerce, since it lies at the Isthmus and controlled two harbours, one serving the East/Asia, the other serving the West/Italy.The sanctuary of Aphrodite was so wealthy that it possessed as slaves of the Temple, more than 1000 courtesans. By reason of them, the city was thronged and enriched by the sailors who spent their money easily, hence the proverb - "Not for every man is the voyage to Corinth".

Mycenae
Located half-way between Corinth and Argos and controlling the natural pass from the Isthmus to the Peloponnese,

Patmos
"The Jerusalem of the Aegean" is one way of describing Patmos , as it was referred to in one 5th century inscription. It was here that St. John was exiled between 95 and 97 A.D. and was inspired to write the Book of Revelation or Apocalypse. Patmos, situated between Leros and Ikaria, is a mountainous island with rocky soil and an abundance of small coves. The majestic 11th Century fortress-monastery crowns the hill above the port.
