The
Giza Plateu -
Perhaps
Cairo's main attraction. The last surviving remnants of the 'Seven
Wonders of the ancient world' - the Pyramids of Giza, guarded by the
SPHINX.
There are three pyramids the largest of which is the Great Pyramid
of the Pharaoh Cheops of the Fourth Dynasty, built around 2700 B.C.
covering 13 acres and 480 feet high. It has funeral compartments and
a huge network of passages.
The Sphinx measures 190 feet and is 66 feet high with a human-headed
lion. Most authorities say it was built by Cheops and its face has
his likeness.
A stunning region that never fails to impress the visitor. |

Christian Cairo
-
The
Hanging Church derives its name from its location on top of the southern
tower gate of the old Babylon fortress with its nave suspended above
the passage. The church was the seat of the Coptic patriarchate until
the 14th century. It became known to travellers during the 14th and
15th centuries as the "staircase church" because of the
twenty-nine steps that lead to the entrance. Inside the church are
collections of over one hundred icons of which the oldest dates from
the 8th century. The craftsmanship of the 10th-13th century iconostases
is inlaid in cedar, ebony and walnut. |
